High ISO Speed Comparison Canon 1D Mark III vs. 1Ds Mark II

Today we used a handball tournament to evaluate the high ISO
performance of the new Canon 1D Mark III in comparison to the 1Ds
Mark II.

We measured an advantage of nearly one stop in the high ISO
performance of the 1D Mark III over the 1Ds Mark II.

1) 1D Mk III, 3200 ISO, no noise reduction

1) 1D Mk III, 3200 ISO

2) 1Ds Mk II, 1600 ISO, no noise reduction

2) 1Ds Mk II, 1600 ISO

3) 1D Mk III, 3200 ISO, no noise reduction

3) 1D Mk III, 3200 ISO, no noise reduction

4) 1D Mk III, 3200 ISO, no noise reduction

4) 1D Mk III, 3200 ISO, no noise reduction

5) 1Ds Mk II, 3200 ISO, no noise reduction

5) 1Ds Mk II, 3200 ISO, no noise reduction

We didn’t apply any noise reduction on the pictures. The right side show the 100% crop and on the left you can see the thumbnail of the pictures.

Our assessment: the 1D Mk III shows nearly a one stop advantage in high ISO performance.

Other measures during our first sport event with the 1D Mk III:

1) Auto-Focus feels much more responsive and is for sure an improvement over the 1D Mk II. We used the 2.8L 70-200 mm for the shoot and this combination seems to lock the focus instantaneous. Of course also much faster than with the 1Ds Mk II (so no surprise here).

2) Due to the smaller battery the combo feels really lighter and is more pleasure to use hand hold.

3) The viewfinder is really brighter than that of the 1D Mk II and seems to be nearly on par with the 1Ds Mk II
